Caribbean Sunsets

A few weeks ago my wife and I had the chance to spend a week in the Caribbean on the island of Antigua. While photography and graphic design were not on my mind most of the time, I did bring along my camera and managed to pull myself away from the  beach for a little while to capture a few shots. These two shots show a sailboat anchored off the beach in Dickenson Bay on the north west  side of the island. Larger versions can be seen on my Flickr Photostream.

2009 Bullfrog Spas Summer Shoot

This past Thursday I spent the day in the Daybreak development on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley for an “On Location” photo shoot for Bullfrog spas. Our goal for the shoot was to further enhance our image library with images of new models and a new location. We had scheduled a casting call the previous week to addition models from three local talent agencies and ended up hiring four people for the shoot; two adults and two children. The shoot was four hours long and we ended up with hundreds of photos, so needless to say, I’ve spent the past few days buried in Photoshop editing images. Here are a few of my favorites…

Air Force Thunderbirds

My wife  and I drove up to Ogden earlier today to watch an air show taking place at Hill Air Force Base.  The show featured various stunt planes and military aircraft demonstrations that were incredible to see in person.  The highlight of the show, however, was the demonstration put on by the Thunderbirds. The stunts and formations these pilots are able to perform are amazing and great to photograph…if you can catch them.  The show announcer said that these planes fly at speeds approaching 1,ooo MPH so catching them required incredibly fast shutter speeds and some great timing.  More photos can be see seen on my Flickr photostream.

Wasatch Mountain Photography

When I was younger, I used to love looking through the pages of National Geographic Magazine.  The photography of far off, exotic lands and stories of adventures to places I’d never heard of  were inspiring to me. One day, while I was sitting in the local library, I came across a very memorable article that that was truly amazing.  In the February 1998 edition of National Geographic there was an article about a climbing team that was on an expedition in Antarctica attempting to climb some of the unclimbed granite spires in an area know as Queen Maud Land.  The expedition was covered by National Geographic photographer Gordon Wiltsie for the February 1998 cover story of the National Geographic.  Gordon’s photography was so incredible and the subject matter so beautiful that I decided then and there that I wanted to be a photographer and a climber.  I wanted to be able to capture images of beautiful places and show people small parts of the world that would inspire them in the same way that Gordon Wiltsie’s photography had inspired me.

I spent some time this weekend on a mountaineering trip here in the Wasatch Mountains. It’s admittedly not as exotic a local as Queen Maud Land in Antarctica, but the mountain range is still extremely rugged and beautiful. Relatively few people see these mountains from any place other than the floor of the Salt Lake Valley, even though there are over one million people living at their base. Sharing the views from on high with people who never knew something like this existed in their own backyard is rewarding for me and hopefully someday I might inspire people to see the views for themselves.

Great Salt Lake Train Car

A few months ago I spent an evening on the southern shores of the Great Salt lake taking some pictures as the sun went down. For one reason or another, I never got around to editing them.  Tonight, as I was browsing my files, I stumbled across this image and was really pleased with the way it turned out. The photo is is of an old train car that sits right on the shore of the Great Salt Lake near I-80 as you head west out of Salt Lake City. I have no idea why it’s there  or even how old it is, but it makes a great photography subject.

Showroom Fabric Banners

I designed this series of banners that will be used as showroom decor in Bullfrog Spas dealer showrooms across the US and Canada.  The design needed to be elegant and visually impactful  with the overall goal being to highlight some of the lifestyle and therapy advantages of owning a Bullfrog Spa.  The design also needed to help set our brand apart from other competitors who would also be sharing floor space alongside our brand.

Each banner features a lifestyle photo from some of my past photo shoots as well as a tag line that reinforces each image image.  I chose black as the main color because of its classic, elegant nature and because of the visual weight it will carry in a showroom environment.

Specs:  Each banner will be printed on fabric and mounted on a floor stand made of powder coated aluminum.  The dimensions of the banners themselves are 5′ x 3′ and the overall dimension once the banner is mounted on a frame is about 8′ x 3′.

Crack Canyon Wilderness Area Photography

I spent this past weekend down in the San Rafael Swell hiking and taking pictures with friends and family.  We spent some time exploring Crack Canyon and the surrounding area and had a great time in the warm spring weather.  The terrain in the San Rafael Swell is very rugged and beautiful and provides some fantastic photography subjects.

Bullfrog Spas Lifestyle Posters

I designed a series of three lifestyle image posters to work in conjunction with the new Bullfrog Spas System Posters from a few weeks ago.  The goal was to add a few more poster options for our dealers that would allow them to further enhance the look and feel of their showrooms.  Each poster features three different images and illustrates some of the lifestyle advantages to owning a Bullfrog Spa.  Specs 2′ x 3′.

2009 Bullfrog Spas Winter Shoot

I spent all day Friday in Ogden for an on location photo shoot for Bullfrog Spas.  Over the past few years Bullfrog has put together a large collection of product imagery, but we didn’t have anything from the winter months. During our fall photo shoot we decided that we would return to the same Ogden location once the snow fell so that we could expand our imagery collection even further. We hoped that the mountains that had served so well as a backdrop during the fall would be equally as impressive once they were covered in snow. The scenery didn’t disappoint. Here are a few of my favorites from the shoot…

Lights of Downtown SLC

I went downtown after work today in the hopes of catching a few sunset, dusk, and night shots around the city. The smog and haze took a lot of the clarity out of  the pictures and the image results were less than spectacular because of it. I was, however, pleased with these two  shots.

Photography in Logan and Heber

This past weekend I spent some time in both Logan and Heber City taking care of some errands.  It was a busy weekend, but I was able to spend a little time with the camera and take a few pictures.  Here are a few of the highlights…

2009 Bullfrog Spas Model Brochure

In addition to the larger brochure I posted  a few weeks ago, Bullfrog offers a more condensed version that shows a quick overview of the product offerings along with an explanation of what makes Bullfrog Spas unique.  Designed as a three panel 8.75″ x 11″ piece, this brochure offers dealers a cheaper alternative to the larger brochure.  As with the larger brochure, I cannot take credit for the design.  It was designed by my friend Clay Norman.  However, the majority of the photography was done by myself.  As I’ve said before, seeing your work in action is really rewarding.

I took this photo last weekend while spending the day climbing in the Wasatch mountains here in Utah.  What caught my eye in the particular image is how the light and shadow play off of each other to create some interesting lines.

2009 Bullfrog Spas Master Brochure

One of the most rewarding parts of a project is getting the final printed piece back from the printer.  Our marketing department has been working on this brochure for quite some time now and it is nice to finally have it done.  I cannot take credit for the design and layout of the brochure.  My coworker and friend Clay Norman put it together and I must say he did a fantastic job.  I can, however, take credit for a large portion of the photography that was included in the brochure.  Talon Printing here in Salt Lake took care of the printing and the results were great.  we’ve worked with them on a number of projects and I highly recommend them.  Here are a few sample spreads from the brochure…

Bullfrog Spas Studio Shoot

These images were taken during a studio shoot for Bullfrog Spas’ new 2009 product line.  My goal was to highlight some of the new features of the 2009 product using artistic and creative angles.  Unfilled spas make for an interesting photography subject.  Shiny surfaces, curvy sweeping lines, and high contrast between the jets and the rest of the spa offer some interesting opportunities.  These images are used in a variety of print and web applications.
